FALL’S NEW LIGHT—Introducing our VMAN 57 cover star Emmanuel Macchia!

Emmanuel Macchia is still getting used to being called an actor. Only months ago, the 20-year-old Belgian-Italian had never stepped onto a film set, let alone imagined that his first performance would take him to Cannes. Then came ‘Coward,’ his debut as young World War I soldier Pierre, followed by a Best Performance for an Actor win alongside co-star Valentin Campagne and a life that suddenly looked very different.

That moment of transition sits at the heart of ‘Fall’s New Light.’ Photographed by Alvaro Beamud Cortés and styled by Anna Trevelyan, Macchia arrives on his first VMAN cover while still finding his footing in everything that has followed. In conversation with VMAN’s Mathias Rosenzweig, he opens up about the shyness that once made acting seem impossible, adjusting to life in the spotlight, and the younger version of himself he carried through the experience. “A lot of times during the shooting, I kept thinking, ‘I’m doing this for my younger self.’”
